“Stamp Out Hunger” food drive kickoff Wednesday

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) –Mayor Jim Gray along with United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 227, and the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 361 will kick off the 25th Anniversary of the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

The National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is the largest single-day of giving.

The UFCW and NALC broke the world record for the largest single-day food drive last year, collecting 80 million pounds of food.

This year, the are aiming to grow that number.

The kickoff will be held at  NALC Branch 361 (1101 Red Mile Rd., Lexington) at 10 AM on Wednesday, April 26th.

Each family in Lexington will have the opportunity to participate.

Between the kickoff Wednesday and Saturday, May 13th, grocery bags containing detailed instructions will be delivered to Lexington homes.

All you have to do is leave a non-perishable food donation in a bag on your doorstep on Saturday, May 13th, and the Postal carrier will take care of the rest.

All food collected in Lexington will benefit local food banks: Light House Ministries, Catholic Action Center and God’s Pantry.

The food drive’s timing is crucial. Food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. By springtime, many pantries are depleted, entering the summer low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need.
