Students host African-American Achievement Awards

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- A group of local students hosted an awards show today to highlight local African-Americans who’ve had a positive impact on Kentucky.
The entire show was organized and hosted by students from Carter G. Woodson academy.
The students say they came up with the idea for an awards show after discussing in class different Kentuckians who’ve had an impact here but aren’t known too well by the community.
The awards show was held at First Baptist Church Bracktown.
The night honored a variety of local African American activists and community leaders including police officers, school administrators and religious leaders.
Students say their goal was to highlight people in the community doing great things and let them know they are appreciated.

“It’s important to highlight these people from kentucky to notify what they have done and some people who have created who’ve had inventions and those people who are just not appreciated and not highlighted for what they have done for the commonwealth,” said Maliq Trigg, a student at Carter G. Woodson Academy.
This was the first time this award show was hosted but the students tell me they hope to make this an annual event.
