High school teacher facing sex charges involving student

ASHLAND, Ky. (AP) – Authorities say a Boyd County High School teacher is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a female student.

Deputies say 52-year-old Michael Sammons of South Shore was arrested Monday and charged with third-degree rape and prohibited use of electronic communication systems to procure a minor, according to local news reports.

The Daily Independent says Sammons is a math teacher and longtime area football coach.

Boyd County Schools Superintendent Brock Walter says the school received information Monday and the school resource department began an investigation.

Walter says Sammons, who has taught in the area for more than 20 years, has been suspended. He has coached football at Greenup County High School and was a head coach at Portsmouth Notre Dame.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Sammons has an attorney.
