Fire starts in trash compactor at apartment complex

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Lexington firefighters put out a fire quickly at an apartment complex but had a more challenging time trying to get the smoke out.

The Lexington Fire Department responded to 137 Rose Street at the Rose Tower apartments at around 3 a.m.

It is an apartment complex for senior citizens.

Firefighters say they found a small fire burning in the trash compactor on the outside of the building. Firefighters believe it was started by a cigarette butt.

The smoke from the fire filtered into the building.

The building had to be ventilated but did not have to be evacuated.

Firefighters say one person complained of smoke inhalation but there were no injuries.

The fire is under investigation.
