Child Brings Gun To Southern Kentucky Elementary School

The investigation continues in Pulaski County after officials said a fifth-grader accidentally brought a loaded handgun to school.

The principal at Southern Elementary said the boy was dropped off Monday and immediately told his teacher when he realized his father’s pistol was in his pants pocket.

He had allegedly left it there when he was wearing the pants the night before.

A letter was sent home to parents to inform them of the incident and the boy was suspended from school.

“I thought it was handled well,” said Mike Isaacs, who has three children at Southern Elementary. “They got right on it and did everything it looked like they could do.”

The case was turned over to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office.

The Pulaski County Sheriff said they have released the boy to his father, but he has to wear an ankle monitor while he awaits his hearing.

The investigation continues as authorities decide whether the boy’s father will face charges.

“I certainly believe that 11 years old is a proper age to be going out with their parents and being taught about gun safety and shooting guns,” said Sheriff Tom Wood. “I have reservations about allowing an 11 year old to have in his possession, unsupervised, a loaded firearm.”

Officials said the boy was never planning to use the gun at school and was never a threat to other students.
