93rd District: candidates Kyle Whalen and Adrielle Camuel
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — It’s election season, and today we’re looking at the two candidates running for State Representative in the 93rd district of Kentucky, which includes Fayette County.
We spoke with Republican Kyle Whalen and Democrat Adrielle Camuel on why they should be elected for the job.
“I literally have the finger on the pulse of the district like my I have walked and talked and conversed and you know, learned about the people of my neighbors, you know it’s my community,” said Camuel.
“My whole life I’ve always been a servant-leader, I believe and this would be another way to serve as the representative for the 93rd district from Lexington,” said Whalen.
Both candidates have different goals they want to see accomplished for the 93rd district.
“I want to do everything I can to help fight for that to make sure that all Kentuckians have access to healthcare including reproductive care that they should have,” said Camuel.
“Well, I think we have to have more oversight, I think the state lacks oversight if you look at how some of the cabinets have performed, look at unemployment insurance,” said Whalen.
Camuel says everyone should have access to high-quality public education and it should include universal preschool.
“I’ve heard what people have said, they really want universal preschools starting out for all 4-year-olds because we’ve got a lot of single parents who want to get back into the workforce but cannot afford to do so because the cost of preschool, if they have to pay for it privately, is too expensive, and the cost of daycare, they’re priced out of quality daycare,” said Camuel.
One of Whalen’s initiatives if elected as state Representative is tax reform.
“But as long as we have that unfunded pension fund, we do not have a surplus, we have set some money aside which we need to do, but we need to also be aware that that is still an issue and I think sometimes things like that get swept underneath the rug. But tax reform is important, we absolutely need to carry on because we have to compete with the states around us,” said Whalen.
Overall, both candidates are passionate about Kentucky and the work they want to do for the 93rd district.
“I’ve watched the political process, I feel like we have to do a better job communicating with each other. Putting parties aside, trying to figure out what we need to do to move Kentucky forward and help all Kentuckians,” said Camuel.
“I don’t think issues are solved with one-stop answers, I think they’re very nuanced these days and that’s what we need to work on,” said Whalen.
Early voting is open today through this Saturday.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 7.
