911 call from Gorilla encounter released

CINCINNATI, Oh. (WTVQ) – There are a few investigations going on surrounding the killing of a 450 pound gorilla named Harambe.

Cincinnati Zoo officials say it was the only option after a three-year-old boy fell into the gorilla enclosure Saturday.

In addition to the police investigation, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums which accredits zoos is also investigating. The U.S. department of agriculture says it will determine whether the zoo was complying with animal welfare laws.

Crews are already working on barriers around the exhibit and investigating how to prevent something like this from ever happening again.

On Wednesday, Cincinnati Police released audio of the call the boy’s mother made to 9-1-1 after her son fell in and Harambe grabbed him.

A spokesperson for the boy’s family says they have no plans to sue the zoo over what happened and are cooperating with police in the investigation. They also say they will not keep any cash donations sent to them, but instead ask money be sent to the zoo to honor Harambe.

The three-year-old boy is said to be recovering.
