Road crews hit the pavement before snow arrives
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Road crews were out early this morning treating streets for the first real snow fall of the winter.
Crews began loading up at the salt barn at around 4:00 a.m., then headed out to treat the roadways in preparation for the snow. State highway crews also got an early start, patrolling and treating roadways as necessary.
Many crews were out yesterday, pre-treating bridges, overpasses and ramps with an anti-icing solution. They say drivers, however, should still be prepared for slick and snowy roads.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet offers these tips for staying safe on snowy roads:
- Allow plenty of time to get to your destination, and do not use cruise control.
- Leave enough room between you and the car in front of you – stopping in snow may require up to four times your normal stopping distance.
- Drive using low-beam headlights so you can be seen.
- If you do find yourself sliding while driving, ease your foot off the gas while carefully steering in the direction you want the front of your vehicle to go.
