GPD: Suspect points pellet gun at police, officer shoots

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Georgetown police officer shot a man early Monday morning after he reportedly refused to drop a weapon and pointed it at the officer.

Police say they received a domestic violence call around one thirty Monday morning. When they arrived they saw Stephen Young, 29, with a gun.

An officer told Young to drop to weapon but instead he reportedly pointed it at the officer and the officer fired.

Young was hit twice in the torso. He was taken to U.K. Hospital. ABC 36 is told he is expected to recover.

Officers later learned that Young’s handgun was a pellet gun.

“One of the officers secured the weapon in his pocket while they were giving first aid to the subject, getting him under control. It wasn’t until after the subject was under control and first aid was being given that he, at some point, removed the weapon from his pants to examine it and found that it was a pellet gun,” said Chief Mike Bosse with Georgetown Police.

Investigators say Young slapped a five-month-old and chocked a woman inside a home on North Hamilton Street.

Investigators say other family members were inside the home at the time of the shooting but no one else was hurt.

Police won’t say which officer shot Young but ABC 36 is told he’s been on the force five years. He’s now on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure anytime an officer is involved in a shooting.

Police say Young will be charged with the assaults associated with the domestic violence and with pointing the weapon at the officer.

Young already had an active warrant for his arrest for flagrant nonsupport. Chief Bosse said Young has charges in other states but did not give any more detail.
