UK taking part in worldwide #GivingTuesday

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — The University of Kentucky in Lexington is joining the global day of giving called #GivingTuesday. The school says the fundraiser tomorrow will promote philanthropy and celebrate the generosity of UK alumni and friends.

With #GivingTuesday, the UK community is invited to make a gift to one or more of UK’s colleges and programs. The school says the fundraiser was created in 2011 in response to the increased commercialization of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

“#GivingTuesday is a day that unites the University of Kentucky community as we impact the mission of this great institution through our charitable giving,” said Anne Lichtenberg, director of annual giving.

The school says last year, more than 30,000 charitable organizations and nonprofit organizations in 68 countries participated in #GivingTuesday.

Lichtenberg says, “Social media will be a large component in reaching out to our alumni and friends…We encourage everyone to post on their social media accounts using the hashtags ‘#GivingTuesday’ and ‘#SeeBlueGiveBlue.’ We want all of UK and its supporters to promote this as a day of giving back to the university.”
