6th Congressional District Democratic front runners

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- The biggest race to watch today is the 6th Congressional District Democratic Primary.

The two front runners are Lexington Mayor Jim gray and retired fighter pilot Amy McGrath.

Both are getting national attention.

Gray was one of the first openly gay people elected in Kentucky. He spent his career growing his family construction business…before winning the mayoral race in Lexington.

In the last election cycle he made a failed bid for Rand Paul’s senate seat.

McGrath has spent her life in the military. She just retired from the marine corps about a year ago.

Neither candidate differs much on the issues.

Political science professor Stephen Voss says that’s not uncommon in a primary.
Voss says “people tend to pick on things that don’t end up mattering the second time around in a gen election. They pick on style of leadership, they pick on what person is more likely in the issues of the future to decide them the way I would.”

Voss thinks representative Andy Barr…the expected winner in his primary…has reason to be nervous.
