Every kid at an elementary school gets a winter coat
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – It’s been cold outside and it will be even colder next week which means it’s time to break out your winter gear.
A sad reality is that there are many people who don’t have a jacket to keep them warm.
UnitedHealthcare teamed up with the Dream Builders Foundation to give every student at Booker T. Washington Elementary School in Lexington a winter coat.
About 300 jackets were given away and there was a special guest who helped kids find the perfect coat.
Former UK and NBA star, Rex Chapman helped the kids.
He says as a boy, he remembers some of his friends not having jackets. He believes it’s something we take for granted.
“The kids are so excited here today to be getting new winter coats and I just know what a big deal that is,” said Rex Chapman.
The students were excited to meet him and get a new coat.
“If we go outside for recess today, it’s going to be real comfortable. I’m not going to be cold at all,” said Jaymen Anderson, 5th grader.
UnitedHealthcare donated $15,000 to jackets, $3,000 to socks, hats, gloves, etc., and $2,000 to a mural that will be painted on the front of Booker T. Washington elementary school.
