502 area code running out of numbers

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) The Kentucky Public Service Commission is hosting meetings across Central Kentucky to gather public input on the potential addition of a new area code, as the 502 area is expected to run out of available phone numbers by 2027.

Officials say a public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in Georgetown. It will be held at the Scott County Fiscal Courtroom on East Main Street. A similar meeting took place yesterday in Bardstown.

Additional meetings are scheduled later this month in Louisville, Carrollton and Frankfort.

The PSC says public input will help guide decisions about how to introduce a new area code—whether by splitting the region or by overlaying a new code on the same area.
