300-year old Bur Oak tree in Lexington park to be removed

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A 300-year old Bur Oak tree in South Point Park in Lexington will soon be removed for safety reasons.  The decision to take the tree down was made after a professional arborist inspected it and did decay tests, according to the city.

"You never want to lose a tree this old," said Tim Queary, the city’s Urban Forester, "but safety and the well being of those who use our parks sometimes requires that we do."

Once the tree is removed, pieces of the trunk will be taken to McConnell Springs and the Arboretum for educational display purposes, according to the city.
