Update from June 3, 2021:
MT. STERLING, Ky. (WTVQ) – A man accused of trying to run over a Mount Sterling police officer twice during a traffic stop last month was arrested following a barricade situation on Wednesday, according to the Mt. Sterling Advocate.
The report says 46-year old James Bussell, of Owingsville, was found hiding under the front porch of a mobile home on Kiddville Road where he was reportedly staying with an acquaintance.
The report says Bussell barricaded himself inside the home and did not respond to repeated calls to turn himself-in.
After several hours, a K9 was brought in and found Bussell hiding under the front porch, according to the report. He was arrested without incident.
A belt knife and a BB gun were reportedly found inside the home, according to the report.
On May 27, 2021, Mount Sterling Police Officer Cody McDaniel and his K9 partner, Bommel, tried to pull Bussell over on Richmond Avenue.
Police say Bussell made a U-turn and tried to run the officer down. Officer McDaniel fired two shots at Bussell. Bussell was not hit, but a tire on his 1998 Ford Ranger pickup truck was hit, according to investigators. Kentucky State Police say Bussell made another U-turn and tried to run down Officer McDaniel again, but ended up getting his pickup truck stuck near Hinkston Creek. KSP says Bussell got out of the pickup truck and took off running and hadn’t been seen until his arrest on June 2.
Bussell was wanted on warrants charging him with Attempted Murder (police officer) and Fleeing or Evading Police-1st degree (police officer).
He was taken to the Montgomery County Regional Jail.
The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the initial incident. The unit investigates all officer-involved shootings in the state.
