LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A 31-year-old Corbin man is charged with second-degree assault after a gun goes off during a fight and critically injures a 15-year-old, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.
William R. Mays was arrested by Sheriff’s Det. James Sizemore at about 9:20 a.m. Friday on Keavy Road about five miles south of London following an investigation into a shooting that happened at about 2:45 a.m.
According to the sheriff, Mays briefly struggled with a 15-year-old boy at the Keavy Road address and during the altercation, struck the teen in the head with a handgun. The gun went off, shooting the boy in the head.
The 15-year-old was taken by Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County to Corbin Healthcare Hospital for treatment and then transferred to UK Medical Center in critical condition
Sheriff’s investigators recovered a .380 semiautomatic pistol, Root said.
Laurel Sheriff’s investigators assisting at the scene included: Lt. Chris Edwards, shift Sgt. John Inman, Deputy Landry Collett, Deputy Justin Tyler, Deputy Hobie Daugherty, and Deputy Brad Mink. Laurel Sheriff’s Detective James Sizemore is the lead investigator.
