VERSAILLES, Ky. (WTVQ) – Adrienne Southworth, of Lawrenceburg, bested a five-person field to win the Republican nomination for the open District 7 state Senate seat.

She will face Democrat Joe Graviss, of Versailles, who ran unopposed. Southworth is former Lt. Gov. Hampton’s aide. In addition to Graviss, the November race also features Ken Carroll, the son of former governor Julian Carroll, who once held the seat.

Southworth garnered 3,701 votes across the sprawling district which stretches from Gallatin County along the Ohio River on the north south through Owen, Franklin ad Woodford counties to Anderson County on the south.

Katie Howard finished second with 3,157 votes, Calen Studler was third with 2,697 votes, Linda Thompson was fourth with 1,952 and Cleaver Kirk Crawford received 390 votes.

Graviss served one term representing District 56 in the state House but stepped aside to seek the Senate seat this year.

The race will be among a number to watch in November, according to pundits. Below is a wrapup from the Babbage Bulletin:

GOP Senator Albert Robinson loses to Brandon Storm in three-way primary — Storm defeated incumbent Robinson and challenger Hensley, 38.71%, 34.52%, 26.78% respectively. Serving in the General Assembly off and on for nearly 50 years, Senator Robinson represented southeastern Kentucky and chaired multiple committees throughout his tenure, most recently Veterans, Military Affairs and Public Protection. His opponent, Brandon Storm, is a young attorney from Laurel County. Storm faces Democrat Walter Trebolo III in November.

Kentucky House Highlights

Two freshmen Republicans lose primaries

Travis Brenda (R-Cartersville) lost to GOP challenger Josh Bray by 30 votes. In an odd twist of fate, Brenda won his seat in 2018 by narrowly defeating then-House Majority Floor Leader Jonathan Shell. Given the close margins, Brenda has called for a recanvass of the votes.

If confirmed, Bray faces no opposition in November. Ryan Dotson beat current state Rep. Les Yates (R-Winchester) in the Republican Primary. Dotson was endorsed by Yates’ predecessor Donna Mayfield and will battle Democratic primary winner Kenny Blair in the general election.
