EVARTS, Ky. (WTVQ) – A man is charged with murder after he hits his aunt in the head with a concrete block during an argument and she later dies.
According to Kentucky State Police, 35-year-old Derrick Dams, of Evarts, initially was charged with first-degree assault but those charges were upgraded to murder Tuesday in connection with the incident that happened at about 8:40 p.m. Monday night.
Troopers say they were called to an assault at a home on KY 38 in the Evarts community in Harlan County.
Adams and his aunt, 56-year-old Sherry Brashear, were in an argument and he started “physically assaulting her before he struck her in the head with a cinder block,” the KSP said in a release.
Brashear was flown from the scene to Pikeville Medical Center where she died at 2:28 a.m. Tuesday, according to the KSP.
The case remains under investigation by Det. Andy Soltess.
