FAYETTE CIUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – Shirley Flynn Mitchell easily out-distanced two opponents to win the Democratic nomination for the 45th District House seat in western Fayette County left open when Stan Lee didn’t seek another term.
Mitchell won with 69% of the vote, 5,546 compared to 1,610 for Corey Nichols and 847 for Sean Mike Pickard.
She faces Republican Killian Timoney who didn’t have a primary opponent.
“First of all, as a woman of faith, I’d like to thank God for leading me on this adventure. I cannot thank my supporters and volunteers enough for believing in me,” Mitchell said. “Thank you for your vote, thank you for your time, and thank you for your financial support. This is your campaign, and I look forward to working closely with all of you to win in November. I want to thank my family and sisters for their support and counsel, too. Finally, thank you to my amazing campaign team who worked so hard to help me run a creative race through COVID-19.
“Aside from my service in the Navy as a Civil Engineer Corps Officer, District 45 has always been my home,” Mitchell continued. “I am excited for the opportunity to represent this district in Frankfort to fight for our teachers, our students, our environment, and our essential workers who risked so much for us during the COVID-19 pandemic. While there are challenging times ahead, I will always advocate to build a resilient economy that works for all Kentuckians. As a proud product of KY Public Education, I will always advocate to have vibrant public schools and teachers who feel valued because they are on the forefront of shaping the next generation.”
The 45th District is bordered on the east by Highway 27 and on the north by Versailles Road. Bluegrass Airport is in the district, which also is bisected by Harrodsburg Road.
