LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)-The Parent-Teacher Store, located off Clays Mills Road in Lexington, has been saved from closure by a teacher and her husband.
Chriss and Meg La Rue decided to purchase the store from the previous owners, Stan Young and his wife, who are based in Bowling Green.
The Youngs announced they planned to retire in 2019, afraid their store might close if a new owner didn’t take over.
A teacher of 20 years, Meg La Rue says she has been a Parent-Teacher Store customer since she and her husband moved to Lexington two years ago.
She says she did not like the thought of the store closing.
“I was just really bothered and saddened that the store might go away,”she said.
The La Rue’s took into account Meg’s years of teaching experience and Chriss’ business experience before deciding to take on the job of running what they believe to be the only school supply store of it’s kind in Central and Eastern Kentucky.
“Otherwise, the teachers here would have to travel to Louisville or the other side of the river in Cincinnati to find a store like this,” says Chriss La Rue.
The Parent-Teacher Store provides a wide range of school supplies that parents, teachers, and even grandparents can use to supplement or enhance a child’s education.
The La Rue’s say they wanted to keep the store open for educators who prefer to purchase the items they need from a store front where they can actually touch the product instead of ordering from a catalog.
The couple says they hope to remain a part of Lexington’s community and continue to market and grow the business.
