FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Kentucky School Nutrition Association discussed legislative problems involving school nutrition programs.
Patty Habermann is the Cafeteria Manager at West Jessamine Middle School.
She says one of her favorite foods to serve students is their new yogurt parfait and smoothies for breakfast.
One of the focuses of the meeting was to increase access to school breakfast for low-income students who may need extra help.
Habermann says students favorites typically involve pizza and chicken nuggets but they also enjoy the chef salads and snacks offered to grab and go.
She says school meals have come a long way since she was in school…
Habermann says, “We offer much more fruits and vegetables, especially the farm to school program where we get local produce from different farmers in the district, and we have a much more wider variety of items that the students can choose from.”
Some of the other topics discussed, giving students more time to eat their healthy meals and reducing school meal prices for families who may struggle to provide healthy and nutritious meals.
Habermann says it’s important because when students are given the right foods it can help them focus more in school.
