LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Police say two men are charged with murder in connection with an assault that happened in December.

The Lexington Police Department says 50-year-old William T. Justus and 48-year-old Mervil Spencer Jr. were arrested Thursday for the death of 59-year-old Michael Coyle.

In December, officers say they were sent to an apartment building on Bayou Court for a disorder with a weapon, involving all three men. At the time, officers say they believed Coyle was the aggressor and they charged him with assault.

Police say Coyle died in January. The Fayette County Coroner’s Office determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma.

After investigating, detectives say they learned Justus and Spencer intentionally attacked Coyle and caused his injuries.

Officers say the number of homicides in 2019 has now increased to 30.
