FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky Democrats are calling out a Republican State Senator for using racial slurs in social media posts.

The party wants a public apology for what they call inappropriate language in Senator Phillip Wheeler’s posts.

One of the posts the party’s upset about is when the slur “coon” was used in reference to Virginia’s Governor.

“Just the language that he used was just so unnecessary. You can still make your point without using racist language,” said Rep. Attica Scott.

Democratic Representative, Attica Scott says as leaders, lawmakers shouldn’t be using these kinds of words in any context. She says it’s hurtful.

“Of course I’m upset but I’m also hurt because I have to walk these halls as the only black woman here and to know there’s a state Senator who’s using that kind of language that is directed at people like me is hurtful,” said Rep. Attica Scott.

Representative Scott says she’s noticed people in Kentucky have been commenting on the posts. She says some of them say they want to take action by filing an ethics complaint.

ABC 36 News has reached out to Senator Wheeler, his office, and the State Republicans. None of them have responded to us with a comment.

We noticed on Thursday afternoon, it appears the Facebook posts have been removed.
