2020 36 Blitz: Great Crossing Warhawks

GEORGETOWN, Ky (WTVQ) – It is the second year of football for great crossing out in Georgetown and Ricky bowling is their third head coach, but that doesn’t mean he’s new.

“I’ve been here since day one and been able to build these relationships with these kids,” said Great Crossing Head Football Coach Ricky Bowling. “We’ve got great kids. They’re bought in. You know we’ve got a good philosophy.”

Veteran Warhawks players are also happy they don’t have to start back at square one with a coach who is new to the program.

“I think it helps a lot with the bond. How he already knows all of us and we know him,” said junior running back Peyton Harris. “We trust him and he trusts us. It’s just a really good thing to have him as our head coach.”

Bowling takes over a young team who only managed one win last season, but that win with an extremely young roster was huge.

“Man, that win was very special,” said Coach Bowling. “I know I’ll never forget that win. A huge milestone for our program to get the first one under our belts. We’re hoping and working our tails off that that’s the first of many to come.”

“Oh, it was huge. Everybody was pumped,” said Harris. “We had a good feeling going into that game. We had a good game plan. Coaches executed very well. We did that whole week in practice and it was a real exciting time.”

Georgetown is known for football. Largely because of Scott county and Georgetown College. Now the Warhawks look to make their mark.

“It’s huge. Crosstown they’ve known for football for forever,” says Harris. “Now we got a new thing going here and trying to have both have a name for this county.

“On social media it shows how much they care and we have tow ork harder to show them that we care too,” says lineman Trey Combs.

“These kids know in Scott County and in Georgetown winning is expected,” says Coach Bowling. “Our biggest thing even looking at last season, we knew we were a new school, new program, but our kids didn’t show any fear.”

As the Warhawks look to build their own tradition here in Georgetown, don’t let their youth fool you. They have some studs. One of them is Kalib Perry. He’s top-10 ranked recruit for the class of ’22 in the state of Kentucky and he’s already pulling in D-I offers.

“Kalib Perry…he’s an athlete and he’s remarkable. He’s an even more remarkable young man,” said Coach Bowling. “He’s a role model, he’s a leader by example and our kids feed off of that as well so that helps. You know he’s not the only one. We have several other players on our team. Tre Combs, center up front. He also plays D-line for us. A junior as well and he really anchors our O-line and D-line.”
