LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – It’s not the opening day Keeneland hoped for after a horse suffered a catastrophic injury during a race.
Keeneland announced Stella d’Oro was euthanized Friday following the injury to the left front limb during the fourth race.
The race track announced another horse, Fast Dreamer, suffered an injury to her right front leg and was taken off the track during the fifth race.
The track recently announced new safety measures to try and prevent horse deaths. It added two new positions – an equine safety director, who is working one on one with the horses and trainers to make sure the horses stay healthy, and a race track professional who monitors and tests the track conditions every day.
Keeneland will conduct a review of the death and injury, and the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission will conduct its own investigation.
