RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ) – Firefighters from four counties responded to an early-morning fire at a Richmond business Thursday.
The fire broke out at Enersys, a battery manufacturing plant, on Eastern Bypass around 1:45 a.m.
According to firefighters, when they arrived, heavy smoke and flames were coming from the building. They say there were 75 people in the building at the time. All got out safely and no injuries were reported.
The fire started in the area where batteries are charged, which made it a challenge to put out, according to the Madison County Fire Department. They say they had to wait until electricity was cut to that part of the plant before they could use water to put out the fire.
The fire caused significant damage to the plant.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
