2019 RMHA International Grand Championships to feature ‘Rockies’ breed
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Rocky Mountain Horse Association is putting on its 31st International Grand Championships at the Kentucky Horse Park this week.
It showcases the diverse breed known as the ‘Rockies’.
“They’re just a great horse. Often they’re called the golden retriever of horses they’re so gentle,” explained Bill Nelson, General Manager of the Rocky Mountain Horse Association.
Nelson and Registrar Cyndee Davis know the breed well.
“The Rocky Mountain Horse is a horse that originated in Eastern Kentucky and is known for its smooth gait. They’re good on the trail and in the ring,” said Davis.
While they do have that in common, ‘Rockies’ come in a variety of colors.
At Southern Elite Stables in Paris, they’re trained by Jessica Shannon. They’ll join a few hundred horses competing in an event this week showcasing the breed.
The three day competition draws in beginners to those more advanced.
“And all these horses you see today come from different states,” explained Davis.
Those who love the breed travel just as far to compete or watch.
“We bring people in from California, Texas, New England, members from Germany, England, Belgium,” said Nelson.
While you do have to be a member of the association to compete, anyone can win the title in a variety of categories.
“There’s the show pleasure grand championship, the trail pleasure grand championship, the country grand championship, the western grand championship. And we also have two divisions for youth riders,” explained Davis.
If you’re not into the competition side of things, the event includes a number of other activities like a side saddle demonstration, pole bending, bareback riding and a trail obstacle.
And back by popular demand is Saturday’s ‘Ride a Rocky’.
“We have some volunteers who are bringing some of their Rockies, just so people who have never sat on a Rocky and ride, can,” said Davis.
It’s a chance for those who love the ‘Rockies’ to celebrate them, as well as a chance for others to learn about them in a fun way.
“You’ll find certain days are specifically packed with youth events, others days are packed with specialty events. And then Saturday evening are the grand championship events that determine who the best of the best are. So depending on what your interest is, take a look at the program, come on out and see what interests you the most,” said Nelson.
The show takes place Sept. 5-7 at the Kentucky Horse Park and is free to attend. You can find a full schedule HERE.
