KSP: Estill Co. teacher charged for not reporting boyfriend’s messages to student

ESTILL COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky State Police say a former Estill County High School teacher is facing charges after her boyfriend sent sexually-inappropriate messages to a student.

Investigators say 39-year-old Sherry Murphy was aware of the conversations between the student and 35-year-old Torstein Torsteinson, but did not report it.

Police say Murphy also deleted the messages between the student and Torsteinson to keep others from finding them.

Murphy was arrested Thursday but was not booked into jail because she has a fractured back, according to police.

She was released on a $10,000 bond and is on home incarceration.

Murphy is charged with unlawful transaction with a minor, tampering with physical evidence and failure to report child abuse/neglect.

According to Estill County School Superintendent Jeff Saylor, Murphy resigned her position as a Spanish teacher at Estill County High School on Wednesday.

He also says the district believes Torsteinson had contact with more than one student and they are still doing follow-ups with students.

Torsteinson was arrested Wednesday.

He is charged with unlawful transaction with a minor and tampering with physical evidence and is in the Three Forks Regional Jail.
