Legends announce new identity as ‘Lexington Leyendas’
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Lexington Legends will have a new identity during Friday night games.
The team will be known as ‘Las Leyendas’ which is Spanish for legends.
The new identity comes from a new minor league baseball program called, Copa de la Diversion.
72 teams across the country were selected to be in the program based on the size of their city’s Hispanic population.
Every Friday, the players will wear the new uniforms, there will be Hispanic food, and authentic music and art.
The purpose for the program is to create a space of inclusion at the ballpark.
“A big piece of our team every year are Latino. They’re from Latin American countries so being able to recognize them on the field as well in comparison with this is going to be great,” said Jillian Waitkus, Lexington Legends Marketing Specialist.
Every baseball cap and jersey will have the sugar skull design which was inspired by Mexican culture and the day of the dead.
