Just before 8 a.m., Maryland State Police was notified a Chevrolet Tahoe was found down an embankment on eastbound Interstate 68 in Cumberland, Maryland. A witness told troopers the vehicle was about 50 yards off the road.

According to troopers, the driver of the vehicle was 31-year-old Avery Smothers, of Lexington. Smothers was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say Smothers may have been thrown from the vehicle, which traveled off the road, hit a tree and rolled numerous times.  The vehicle was not visible from the road.

Smothers was reported missing on March 3. Family members told investigators Smothers left Kentucky on Feb. 26 and was driving to visit relatives in Maryland at the time of his disappearance.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Smothers. You can view the page here.
