School board meeting tense during auditor debate

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Fayette County Public School System has an outside auditor to keep an eye on the books.

Some new members of the school board think that auditor has been on the job too long.

New board member Tyler Murphy says FCPS has used Strothman and Company since 2006. Murphy, as well as board member Will Nash, would like to see a new set of eyes on the school district immediately.

“We have not rotated firms since 2006 and we’ve not rotated managing partners since 2011. To me, that’s very alarming,” Murphy said at the meeting.

This current agreement runs to the end of the 2018-2019 school year, the last year of a 5 year contract. Chief Financial Officer John White says it’s been good for the district so far.

“There have been some academic studies that indicate that you lose that efficiency and lose that knowledge that has been built from having an auditor with tenure. Just like we don’t rotate teachers,” said White.

Board member Raymond Daniels didn’t take too kindly to the new members questioning. He accused Murphy of ‘badgering’ White and others.
