LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – This cold snap makes most people want to stay indoors and the same goes for your pets.
“When it gets this cold something bad could still happen to your animals,” said Shelby Bailey, Lexington-Fayette Animal Care and Control Public Information Officer.
Bailey says if you leave your pet outside all day and night in this weather, it could hurt their health and you could get in trouble with the law.
“Anytime an animal is put in harms way and something could’ve been done about it there’s definitely a potential for a legal consequence,” said Bailey.
If you have an outdoor pet, Bailey says you need to have proper shelter for them.
The shelter must have a solid roof, floor, and walls, plus some type of organic bedding like hay or wood shavings.
There should be food and water and a good tip during the cold weather is to use a plastic bowl so the water doesn’t freeze.
If you want to bring your pet inside but you don’t want them running around the house, there is a solution.
Lexington-Fayette Animal Care and Control center has several crates that they will be borrowing to the public.
The crates come in a variety of sizes and it will be first come, first served.
