AFLEX, Ky. (WTVQ)- State Police say a man has died when he was receiving treatment after assaulting a state trooper while being arrested in connection to a theft, running off, jumping into a river, and then being found across state lines.
KSP says that while an employee of Appalachian Tobacco was working, a person broke into their vehicle, stole a purse and possible other items from inside the vehicle just after 6 a.m. Thursday morning.
After troopers looked over security camera footage, they identified the person who broke into the vehicle as Justin Hatfield, of Delbarton, West Virginia.
Troopers say that while questioning Hatfield, evidence indicated that he had taken the purse.
They say that during the arrest, Hatfield assaulted the trooper, ran over the bank and jumped into the river. Troopers were not sure if Hatfield had made it across the river, so emergency personnel were called out for a search.
After a short search, KSP says Hatfield was found on the West Virginia side of the river on railroad tracks. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Mr. Hatfield then ran over the Bank and jumped into the river. For a short period it was unknown if Mr. Hatfield had made it across the river and Emergency personal were called to assist in the search.
While receiving treatment, Hatfield was pronounced dead. An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday.
