SPEAKER 1: HEY, GUYS. WE ARE BACK, AND WE ARE INSIDE THE JACK JOUETT HOUSE RIGHT HERE IN VERSAILLES, KENTUCKY, AND SUSAN, IT IS A BEAUTIFUL LOCATION, BEAUTIFUL DRIVE COMING OUT HERE. ISN’T IT?
SUSAN: IT IS. IT’S GORGEOUS.
SPEAKER 1: NOW, LET’S TALK ABOUT THE FAMILY. HE HAD A LARGE FAMILY, CORRECT?
SUSAN: HE DID. 12 CHILDREN. HE AND HIS WIFE, SALLY ROBARDS JOUETT, HAD 12 CHILDREN, FOUR BOYS AND EIGHT GIRLS.
SPEAKER 1: WOW. NOW, SOME OF THESE CHILDREN WENT ON TO BECOME PRETTY FAMOUS, TOO, RIGHT?
SUSAN: YEAH. PERHAPS THE MOST FAMOUS WAS MATTHEW HARRIS JOUETT, HIS SON. MATTHEW HARRIS JR. ENDED UP BECOMING A PORTRAITURE ARTIST, ONE OF KENTUCKY’S MOST IMPORTANT PORTRAITURE ARTISTS. HE DIDN’T START OUT THAT WAY. HIS FATHER WAS WHAT WE WOULD CALL LAND RICH. HE DIDN’T HAVE A LOT OF CASH AND ONLY COULD SEND ONE CHILD FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, SO THE CHILDREN CHOSE JACK JOUETT TO GO TO TRANSYLVANIA. THEN HE STUDIED LAW UNDER GEORGE BIBB, BUT HE WAS LESS INCLINED TO PRACTICE LAW THAN HE WAS TO DRAW. AFTER THE WAR OF 1812, HE STUDIED WITH GILBERT STUART, WHO WAS ONE OF AMERICA’S MOST FAMOUS PORTRAITURE ARTISTS, CAME BACK TO KENTUCKY, AND BEGAN PAINTING.
SPEAKER 1: WOW. I MEAN, AN UNBELIEVABLE STORY WITH HIM IN ITSELF. I MEAN, HOW MANY PORTRAITS DID YOU SAY HE DID IN HIS LIFETIME?
SUSAN: THEY’RE ESTIMATING ABOUT 300.
SPEAKER 1: I MEAN, THAT’S AMAZING. IT REALLY IS. NOW, YOU HAVE SOME EVENTS COMING UP. CAN YOU SPEAK TO SOME OF THE EVENTS THAT MIGHT BE COMING UP HERE IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
SUSAN: WE’RE HAVING OUR MATTHEW HARRIS JOUETT DAY IN AUGUST, AUGUST 11TH, WHERE IMPORTANT COLLECTORS WITH ORIGINAL JOUETT PAINTINGS BRING THOSE TO THE HOUSE, AND WE HAVE A LECTURE ON THE PAINTINGS THAT JOUETT DID OF THE OFFICERS IN THE WAR OF 1812.
SPEAKER 1: WONDERFUL. YOU’VE GOT A LOT ON YOUR PLATE FOR THE HOUSE, DON’T YOU?
SUSAN: YES.
SPEAKER 1: WE HAVE TO GO TO BREAK, BUT WE’RE GOING TO COME BACK, AND WE’RE GOING TO TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THE EVENTS AND ALSO HOW PEOPLE CAN GET AHOLD OF YOU, TOO, SO KEEP IT RIGHT HERE.
