HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A coal miner was killed in an accident in Harlan County Wednesday morning.
The Harlan County Coroner says 29-year-old Hubert Grubbs, Jr. was working at the Revelation Energy mine in the Cumberland area when the accident happened.
He says Grubbs was a mile underground, repairing a belt line when he was killed at around 2:15 a.m.
Reports say that Grubb was splicing a conveyor belt when the conveyor started unexpectedly, fatally injuring him.
The coroner says Grubbs worked as a miner for 10 years and was married with no children.
His body is being taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for an autopsy.
All mining operations were shut down Wednesday after the incident and will be suspended while authorities investigate the accident.
The Kentucky Department for Natural Resources, Division of Mine Safety, sent investigators to the mine early Wednesday and remained on scene through the day.
The mine is in the process of a full inspection.
The mine has had fifteen non-compliance citations issued and one closure ordered.
The closure and all but six non-compliance citations have been abated.
In 2017, six analyst observations were conducted at the mine.
The most recent observation was performed on January 11, 2018 that included a safety talk on injury and death prevention with 52 miners on all three shifts.
