SOMERSET, Ky. (WTVQ) – A 68-year-old woman is dead after her grandson accidentally shot her while driving home from church, according to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office.
The victim was identified as Eutta Phelps, of Somerset.
The sheriff says deputies responded to reports of a possible traffic accident on KY 1003, east of Somerset just before 9:00 p.m. Wednesday.
Deputies say they quickly discovered it wasn’t an accident, but an apparent accidental shooting in a car that had pulled over on the side of the highway.
Investigators say one of Phelps’ grandson’s was driving the car, she was a passenger in the front seat. Another grandson was sitting directly behind her in the back seat along with the grandson’s 17-year old cousin, who is not related to Phelps.
Deputies say the two boys in the back seat were looking at a muzzle-loading pistol that had been left in the back seat, when Phelps’ 12-year old grandson sitting behind her, fired the gun, hitting Phelps.
She was rushed to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by the county coroner, according to deputies.
Investigators say all evidence points to this being an accidental shooting.
The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating. No word yet if the gun owner will face any charges. Investigators say at this point, they don’t even know who owns the gun.
