LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — Police accuse a former UK student of putting cameras in a bathroom on campus. After a five and a half month investigation, officers say they’ve
collected more than 300 pictures and videos of girls, some containing nudity.

Police have arrested Ryan Smith, 24, Thursday. According to court documents, back in March, a UK security guard spotted something that shouldn’t be in a restroom, a camera. UK police went to the bathroom at the College of Medicine, but it was locked. The officer knocked and Ryan Smith answered. In the documents, Smith told the officer he was looking for his camera in the bathroom. He said he used it to record his lab work. The video showed Smith placing the camera in the corner of the bathroom, looking directly at it, and then turning the lights off, according to documents.

“Further into the investigation, it just kept getting deeper and deeper. We found more and more images and more victims,” says Chief Joe Monroe, UK Police Department.

Police say they found 354 different photos and videos, some containing nudity. With one of the victims being as young as 10 years old. Chief Monroe says it not only happened on campus, but a home in Woodford County, and a lakehouse in Paducah. He says there’s a lesson that can be learned from all of this

“When people go somewhere in public, whether it’s a motel or someplace they’re not familiar with, take the time to look around, and make sure no one has placed a camera in your room,” says Chief Monroe.

Smith faces charges of voyeurism and promoting a minor in a sexual performance.
