2-Time Horse Of The Year “Wise Dan” Has Emergency Surgery

Two-time Horse of the Year, "Wise Dan," had emergency colic surgery Friday for a problem with his small intestine.

The problem was not expected to end his career, according to the horse’s connections.

Trainer Charlie LoPresti told Bloodhorse.com on Friday that the horse began showing signs of the problem after his morning gallop.

The horse was taken to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington for the hour-long procedure.

The chestnut gelding was expected to remain at the clinic for several days.

LoPresti told Bloodhorse.com that if "Wise Dan" full recovers, he could be away from racing for six-to-eight weeks.

The American Association of Equine Practitioners reports colic is the leading cause of death among horses.

"Wise Dan" won the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic in his most recent start on the Kentucky Derby undercard at Churchill Downs on May 3rd.

The 7-year old gelding has won 12 of his last 13 starts.

He has won six Eclipse Awards.
