2 Louisville officers on leave after suspect shot, killed
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Police and witnesses say a man was fatally shot during a confrontation with police near a middle school when he refused to drop his gun and instead raised it toward two officers.
The names of the officers and the man haven’t been released.
Cherylyan Rayhel says she called police after the man fired several shots about 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Officers arrived and found an armed man in a field near the school.
Police say the officers asked the man to surrender his weapon, but he refused. Gibson says the man fired several shots at the officers, and they returned fire, striking and killing the man.
Rayhel says she watched from her window, alone and scared. She says officers yelled, "Put down the weapon!" but the man instead raised his gun toward them.
The officers have been placed on routine administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
