2 killed in shooting at Family Scholar House near University of Louisville’s Belknap campus

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW via LEX NEWS) — According to a statement by University of Louisville’s president, Gerry Bradley, and provost, Kathryn Cardarelli, two individuals died in a shooting at the Family Scholar House, a University of Louisville partnership organization near the Belknap campus, on Saturday night.
According to the statement, neither of the victims were students nor employees at the university, and the identities of the victims will be released pending notification of next of kin.
Family Scholar House is a nonprofit organization located on Reg Smith Circle that aims to assist student parents and their children, many of whom have experienced poverty, domestic violence, or unstable housing.
“This is a heartbreaking event for the entire Louisville community… Our hearts go out to the residents of Scholar House and their loved ones as they grieve and attempt to process this horrific violence,” the university’s statement read.
According to Bradley and Cardarelli, the shooting’s suspect is not yet in custody, although there is no suspected threat to the campus community. Individuals on campus who observe any suspicious behavior are asked to contact campus police at (502) 852-6111.
For students who may have been impacted by the Saturday night shooting, counseling is available at the university’s counseling center and university employees may receive emotional support through the Employee Assistance Program, according to the university’s statement.
For updates on campus security and safety, students and university employees are urged to download the SafeZone app, which can be downloaded at this link.
“We recognize that emergency situations are frightening. Our first priority is always to secure campus, gain accurate and complete information, and mitigate and eliminate any threats. As such, we may not be able to provide detailed information right away. We ask that the campus community strictly adhere to all directions issued by public safety officials until directed otherwise and to continue monitoring the SafeZone app and their university emails,” Bradley and Cardarelli’s statement read.
