12-year-old boy visits Camp Nelson to place flags on graves

JESSAMINE COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) — Thursday is National Flag Day and the Camp Nelson National Cemetery celebrated with help from a 12-year-old boy.

Preston Sharp, from California, is making a difference with his flower and flag challenge that honors veterans nationwide by placing flags and flowers on their graves.

Sharp, with the help of volunteers, placed flowers and flags on over six-thousand graves at Camp Nelson.

Sharp says he started this challenge back in 2015, after he visited the grave of his grandfather who served in the navy.

He says it was on Veteran’s Day and no one was out there honoring the veterans.

Sharp says it was then he decided he needed to do something. “So since that day I’ve placed over 65,000 flags and flowers out on veterans grave sites in 14 states.”

He says its important to honor veterans everyday and not just on holidays.

His mission is to honor veterans in all 50 states.

Sharp has been recognized for his work by being one of the youngest guests at the Presidential State of Union.
