Fayette Co. Sheriff: Phone scam resurfaces in Lexington
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Fayette Co. Sheriff says a phone scam has resurfaced in Lexington, and is alerting people not to be fooled.
According to the Sheriff, the bogus caller will claim that someone in the household has an unpaid fine, or has missed a jury appearance, or say that the call recipient has an arrest warrant. The caller will identify himself as a Fayette Co. Chief Deputy, and will request that the recipient needs to pay a fine. The Sheriff says the phony Chief Deputy has asked victims to purchase pre-paid or re-loadable money cards and will ask for the card number over the phone to settle the fine.
The Sheriff says the telephone number is fraudulent, and the caller is not associated with the Officer of the Fayette Co. Sheriff.
If you are contacted, the Sheriff says to not send money, and to contact the Sheriff’s Office immediately at (859) 252-1771.
