SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Scott County School District is the latest to implement a mask requirement for the start of the new school year.

“Effective on the first day of school, August 18, 2021, all students, staff members, and visitors to Scott County Schools will be required to wear a mask inside school buildings and on the school bus. This includes students preschool through grade 12,” the district announced Thursday.

The two most important considerations when preparing for back to school in Scott County this year are the health, welfare, and safety of our students and staff and the ability to keep schools open for in person instruction, the district said in its statement.

“For open house and back-to-school events scheduled to occur within the next few weeks, we strongly recommend the use of masks by anyone not fully vaccinated. In most cases, masks are recommended but not required for these events. In some circumstances, like kindergarten camps, sixth-grade transition programs, and ninth-grade orientations, students will be in our schools for extended periods in a traditional classroom setting and will be required to wear a mask,” administrators continued.

“Last year, masking and enhanced safety protocols allowed us to fully re-open school and remain open for the duration of the spring semester without interruption. We were able to remove the mask requirement for our summer school program, but with the increasing incidence rates in our community and the spread of the Delta variant, we experienced the quarantine of entire classrooms and buses in recent weeks.”

“Our decision to mask as we start the year is based on our own data regarding exposure and quarantines.  We will do whatever is necessary to keep students and staff safe and keep our schools open,” th district continued, noting that once classes start, the situation will be re-evaluated and “less-strenuous masking protocols for those who are fully vaccinated” will be considered if supported by local data.

Vaccines are available at the Wedco District Health Department for anyone age 12 or older each Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
