LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A group of men are giving back to the tight-knit community in which they grew up.

Jaron Jones and a group of friends, who grew up together in the Winburn neighborhood in Lexington, are investing in Winburn’s next generation with Winburn Day.

The fair will include 10 inflatables for the kids to play in, as well as games like flag football, basketball, and water balloon fights. Classic fair food will be available, including snow cone, popcorn, and cotton candy stands. During the event, Jones and his friends will be distributing free school supplies.

For Jones, the entire day is about inspiring the next generation of Winburn kids.

“Growing up, you know, in this neighborhood, there’s not a lot of opportunity, but the community is very, very, well, tight knit. Giving the kids an opportunity to come out here and play and have fun–like I said, we’re going to have special guests tomorrow, so getting the chance to meet them and talk to different people, we’re just giving them a variety of different options to succeed,” said Jones.

Jones and 13-14 friends came up with the idea over time and he hopes the event will feel like a family reunion.

“If I didn’t come from Winburn, I don’t know where I would be. It made me who I am, it gave me drive, it helped me see the vision,” said Jones.

Jones hopes the kids who attend the fair feel inspired through meeting him, his friends, and special guests.

“I just want them to understand that the world is big, you know, and that there’s opportunity even though your circumstances might not project that. You can get something out of life, no matter where you come from, no matter where you’re at in life…it’s going to be a party,” said Jones.

It’s all about spreading the good that’s happening in the neighborhood.

“Every time you see Winburn on the news, it’s probably something negative coming out of it. But there’s a lot of positives here, so we want to show that and reflect that,” said Jones.

Winburn Day is Saturday, July 31 at Martin Luther King Jr. Park from 1-7 P.M.
