HARRODSBURG, Ky. (WTVQ) – On Wednesday, those living in Harrodsburg celebrated the city’s 247th birthday with a small outdoor celebration.
According to historians, 247 years ago Harrodsburg was the first permanent English settlement west of the Allegheny mountains.
The city is just 3 years shy of turning 250.
Volunteers in town say they’re already working to make that milestone year an even bigger celebration.
Right now there’s talk of how long the celebration might be.
According to the Mercer County Tourist Commission it could be a week long celebration or even a month long celebration.
One thing is certain though and its that there’s a lot of work to do.
“It’s going to take an entire community effort this isn’t just a few individuals we need everybody on board and we need the word to spread around the state and even beyond the state about all the things that are happening in Harrodsburg we need to the community to take a sense of pride in what we have here,” says Darrik Gray, the Executive Director of the Mercer County Tourist Commission.
