LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – An academic team from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School took first place in Region 11 of the 2021 Governor’s Cup series as multi-county contests wrapped up Feb. 13.
Founded in 1986 to promote classroom achievement, Governor’s Cup is Kentucky’s premier academic competition.
A contest consists of five written assessment exams, composition (on-demand writing), quick recall (quiz bowl), and future problem solving. Following are highlights from Fayette County Public Schools.
Team standings — first place, Dunbar; fourth, Tates Creek; fifth, Bryan Station; sixth, Lafayette; eighth, Henry Clay. (Frederick Douglass did not participate.)
Individual winners — math: Ayush Tibrewal of Dunbar; social studies: Zachary Rossi of Henry Clay; language arts: Alexander Stumbur of Dunbar; arts & humanities: Tess Shalash of Tates Creek; composition: Emily Hu of Dunbar.
Elementary students participate in Governor’s Cup district and regional contests, while the middle grades and high school divisions also include state-level competition. This year’s virtual state finals are March 13-15.
