GARRARD COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – More than 500 Christmas wreaths were laid on veterans’ graves in Garrard County Sunday afternoon.
Organizer Debra Hoskins says about 200 people decorated their loved one’s graves with the wreaths at the Lancaster Cemetery.
A short ceremony with a 21 gun salute kicked it off at 1 p.m.
Hoskins says this event is important because, other than Memorial Day and Veterans Day, the men and women who lost their lives serving the country aren’t publicly honored.
Having lost her dad, who is a veteran himself, Hoskins says it’s personal for her.
“No matter how old the veteran, no matter how long they’ve been deceased, we never can forget them,” Hoskins says.
This is the first year of the event, but Hoskins says she plans to put it on every year.
