Grandmother: Indictment in fatal shooting a step toward closure

Markeeta Campbell/Fayette County Detention Center

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The grandmother of a woman fatally wounded outside Fayette Mall more than a year ago says the indictment of a women this week on murder charges is another step toward closure for the victim’s family.

Lucy Jones, the grandmother of 30-year-old LaPorscha Stringer, said Wednesday the Fayette County Grand Jury indicted 23-year-old Markeeta Campbell this week in Stringer’s death.

“We can finally get justice for my granddaughter, Laporscha Stringer,” Jones said in a text message, noting the court process gives the family that opportunity.

Campbell was arrested on murder charges on Aug. 31, more than a year after Stringer was shot outside the mall as she sat in her car at a traffic light at a Mall exit on Aug. 23, 2019.

She has been in jail since her arrest, held on $500,000 bond.

Prosecutors and police, citing Mall surveillance video and witnesses, have said the two women argued inside the Mall and that Campbell followed Stringer as she tried to drive away. A witness on the phone with Stringer said she referred to how Campbell was “driving crazy” after her and then the woman heard gunshots and Stringer no longer was talking, according to arrest citations.

Stringer left three children and Campbell has a child.
