Officer let go for accidentally firing weapon

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A probationary Lexington Police officer has been terminated after an off-duty accidental discharge of his personally owned handgun.

On Sunday, Aug. 9, Officer Nickolas Edge self-reported an incident that occurred earlier that day when he accidentally discharged the handgun. The round struck an individual, who sustained an injury to his finger.

On Tuesday, Aug. 11, Edge returned to duty, his first shift since the incident. He was immediately terminated by Chief Lawrence Weathers.

Edge was a probationary employee and was employed in April 2019. The Lexington Police Department is not required to send this incident through the disciplinary process for probationary employees.

Lexington Police have been in contact with the injured individual, and at this time no charges are expected.
