BOONE COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A man who lost an alcohol-induced arm-wrestling match is accused of getting angry and shooting at his son.
According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, 55-year-old Curtis Zimmerman was finally arrested after an eight-hour stand off with deputies at his home at 850 Clubtrail Drive in the unincorporated Florence community.
When deputies responded to a disturbance call, two family members had fled the residence but Zimmerman refused to come out, prompting the standoff , which continued until 8:25 a.m. when he surrendered to members of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and the Florence Police Department SWAT Team.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office Hostage Negotiation Team spoke with Zimmerman throughout the morning and ultimately negotiated his safe surrender.
Deputies learned that Zimmerman was intoxicated and challenged his juvenile son to an arm-wrestling contest. When Zimmerman lost multiple times, he became agitated which led to a physical altercation with his son, the department said in a release.
Zimmerman grabbed a firearm and as his son was going upstairs, Zimmerman fired two shots inside of the house. Zimmerman stated that he fired the shots into the ceiling, according to the department.
After being taken into custody, Zimmerman was transported to St. Elizabeth in Florence to be evaluated.
During the standoff, deputies obtained a warrant of arrest for Zimmerman and once he is medically cleared from the hospital, he will be placed under arrest for one count of Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree – Class D Felony. The warrant lists a $5,000 cash bond.
